US and China list $30bn a side of goods for possible tariff cuts

The United States and China have published lists of goods that could be taxed at lower rates under their trade arrangement, covering about $30 billion of annual trade in each direction, Euronews Business reports. China's list runs to 1,619 categories of American products; the US list has 77 categories of Chinese goods. Neither side has said how deep the cuts would be or when they would apply.

The lists were drawn up by the US-China Board of Trade, a body set up during President Trump's visit to Beijing in May to manage trade in goods both sides consider non-sensitive. The White House said the two countries would consider the products with a view to reduced tariff treatment on a reciprocal basis. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said they had recommended $30 billion of such trade on each side. The arrangement builds on a truce agreed in South Korea last October, after both sides had imposed tariffs above 100% on each other; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that truce has been extended from November to 10 January.

China's list is dominated by food and farm goods, from beef, pork, poultry and seafood to cheese, butter, grains, wine and whiskey, along with coal and nearly 150 wood products. Beijing has committed to importing at least 10 million tonnes of US coal in 2027 and 2028. It also includes medical equipment such as MRI scanners and pacemakers, while soybeans appear only as seeds for planting. The shorter US list centres on consumer goods, including Christmas decorations and lights, small kitchen appliances, bed linen and toys without wireless connections.

For Europe, pork is the most exposed product. The EU shipped about 1.07 million tonnes of pork to China in 2025, roughly a quarter of its exports outside the bloc, according to S&P Global data cited in the report, and has faced Chinese anti-dumping duties of 4.9% to 19.8% since December. Some EU cheese and cream faces anti-subsidy duties of 7.4% to 11.7%.

What it means

A list without rates is a statement of intent, not a price change. The trade effect, and any effect on European exporters, depends on numbers neither government has published yet.
