Japan's consumer confidence slips to 35.4 in September while 90.6% of households expect prices to rise
Japan's Cabinet Office released its Consumer Confidence Survey for September 2026 on 5 October.

The index. The seasonally adjusted Consumer Confidence Index was 35.4, down 0.1 points from August. Its four components moved in opposite directions:
- overall livelihood: 33.8 (down 0.3);
- income growth: 40.5 (up 0.1);
- employment: 40.0 (up 0.1);
- willingness to buy durable goods: 27.3 (down 0.2).
Prices. 90.6% of households expect prices to go up a year ahead, 1.6 percentage points more than in August. 3.8% expect them to stay about the same and 3.3% expect them to fall, both lower than a month earlier.
The survey. It was conducted on 15 September and covered 8,400 households, with a response rate of 79.7%.
