BoJ Tokyo central rate: dollar at 157.84 yen on 28 October, before the policy meeting
The Bank of Japan's daily foreign exchange report for 28 October gives a central rate of 157.84 yen per US dollar for the Tokyo market. The dollar traded between 157.76 and 158.03 during the day, quoted at 157.99–158.00 at 9:00 JST and 157.78–157.80 at 17:00 JST. Euro/dollar was 1.1126–1.1127 at 9:00, and euro/yen 175.79–175.83.
The report also gives the previous business day's turnover in the Tokyo market: $2.861 billion in dollar/yen spot and $87.363 billion in swaps including outright forwards. The Bank's nominal effective exchange rate index for the yen for the previous day stood at 73.72.
For comparison, the same report for 1 October showed a central rate of 158.15, a range of 157.37 to 158.45 and spot turnover of $5.391 billion, with the yen index at 73.84. Across the month, then, the Tokyo central rate moved by about a third of a yen, and spot activity in the latest report was roughly half the level of early October.
The figures come ahead of the Bank's Monetary Policy Meeting on 29 and 30 October; according to its published schedule, the outcome and the Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices are due on 30 October.

What it means
The yen has been remarkably stable in Tokyo trading through October by the Bank's own measures — a fraction of a yen between the start and end of the month, with thinner spot volumes. That leaves the policy decision on 30 October, and the Bank's updated price outlook, as the next scheduled source of new information for the currency.
