Isabel Schnabel leaves the ECB board in January for a senior IMF post
Isabel Schnabel has told ECB President Christine Lagarde she will step down from the Executive Board on 3 January 2027, the ECB announced on 24 September 2026. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has said she intends to appoint Schnabel as the Fund's Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, effective 4 January 2027.
Schnabel remains a member of the Executive Board and the Governing Council until she moves.

What it means
The Executive Board has six seats and each one carries a portfolio, so a departure is a reallocation of work as much as a vacancy. Schnabel's public positions on the balance sheet and on how far monetary policy should lean against supply shocks have been among the more distinct on the board, and the appointment that replaces her will be read for that reason.
The timing is also a reminder that these seats are filled by member-state negotiation rather than by the institution. Eight-year non-renewable terms exist to make the holder independent of whoever appointed them; a mid-term departure hands the nomination back to the Council earlier than the calendar intended.
